The first strong
shock wave passed through the town's relatively quiet way of life over
generations with the entrance of the Red Army's tank columns on September
17, 1939. They were greeted with warmth by the citizens. The new government
made efforts to integrate the town into the mold of the constitution of
the Soviet regime. This revolutionary change undermined the generation-old
Jewish way of life.
