3 of 5 sketches from Mendl Tabchnik’s article page 301 [Yiddish] Translation and summary: Hannah Kadmon
In the Tatar Alley that was wholly settled by Tatars, there was always the smell of hides and glue. In summer, with the heat, the smell penetrated the neighboring streets. The Tatars processed hides for the Jewish leather industry. They were almost separated from the other non-Jews and were very friendly and mingled with the Jews. Jewish children were taught that the Tatars were descendants of Yishmael, son of Abraham’s other wife, Hagar.
Ibrahim, the Tatar, lived at the edge of Keider Street, not far from Metshet and worked for the Bund for his livelihood.
