The Post office

Transportation from our shtetl to others, was by the Moscow-Warsaw Road. The sand road Kelck-Pinsk would be covered with snow every year in winter. In spring and autumn it was muddy and therefore the transportation road all year round was Slutzk-Siniavka – train station Liakhovitz.

This road was used apart from carriages, also the Diligence – a heavy coach painted yellow and doors painted black, hitched to 4 horses. The horses were changed every 21 km. and there were stables for the horses near post stations on the road. The Diligence went back and forth several times every day.

Our Shtetl Siniavka had also such a post station. It was located in the center of the shtetl. The Diligence arrived each day at fixed times. When arriving full with travelers from Liakhovitz, our people would wait for letters or for merchandize. Also to get news from other places. There were 3 “classes” in the Diligence.

Class A was in the middle and it was screened off from class B and C . It had entries from two sides and the benches facing the road were upholstered to sit 3 persons. It was very expensive. Class B was in the back part with a back door. There were along the walls wood-benches, no windows – 4 passengers to each bench. Class C contained 2 iron benches fastened to the outer walls to accommodate several people. The driver and conductor sat in a special place and next to them the clerk who was responsible for the mail. This clerk handed the parcels fastened with iron strings to our natshalnik who was very proud of his job with his black uniform and red buttons. He was acquainted with all the inhabitants and when someone did not get a letter he would tell him: it is still being written…
